Let’s just make this clear. The Senate is well aware that as long as the plebes are busy pointing guns at each other, those guns aren’t pointed at them.

This is an important public good. It’s pretty clear that since it’s funded by oil and gas revenue, Congress has as it’s goal a 900 million dollars tax break for the oil and gas industry. via Facebook

So, it looks like there’s another attempt to unionize non-academic staff at UNH. This time, it’s the NEA.

Here’s something to think about: the NEA is a teacher’s union, through and through. Every piece of information I can find on their website backs this up, but for an underwhelming section for “Education Support Professionals” that contains little more than vagaries. No good history of past successful negotiations, and the focus of much of the text is *still* on student-interacting workers.

The last unionization effort offered us a chance to organize under a food service industry union or under the “other” category of the UAW.

If we’re serious about this, why aren’t UNH employees looking at unions that actually understand what we do?
Why aren’t we looking at the IWW, which actually has IUs that cover nearly every trade practiced at UNH, and has tools to support bargaining that allows for different representation for different working units?

From IU460 for foodstuff workers, to IU560 for Communications, Computer, and Software Workers, on over the 600 shops for the various kinds of Public Service workers in other trades at UNH.

Moreover, the IWW supports self-organization and local negotiation with the employer-classes, rather than imposing negotiation terms based on the arbitrary standards set by a national or regional organization that doesn’t have the time to look closely at the operating reality of the workers at a particular institution.
